Frank McClellan selected for induction into National High School Hall of Fame
April 3, 2003

By Wadie Moore
AR Activities Assoc. Media Director

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Barton’s Frank McClellan, considered the most successful high school football coach in Arkansas history, is one of 11 individuals selected for induction into the 2003 class of the National High School Hall of Fame.

This class is the 21st group to be inducted in the Hall of Fame, which was started in 1982 by the NFHS to honor athletes, coaches, contest officials, administrators and others for their extraordinary achievements and accomplishments in high school athletics. This year’s class increases the number in the Hall of Fame to 290. The induction ceremony will be held July 2 in Chicago, IL, site of the National Federation of State High School Association’s (NFHS) 84th annual Summer Meeting.

McClellan is the seventh recipient from Arkansas. He’ll join Donnie Kessinger of Forrest City (1982, athlete), Sidney Moncrief of Little Rock (1992, athlete), the late Earl Quigley of Little Rock (1997, coach), Bill Mayo of Blytheville (1998, administrator), Oliver Elders of Little Rock (1999, coach) and Keith Jackson of Little Rock (2001, athlete).

This year’s NFHS Hall of Fame class will consist of Herschel Walker, one of the greatest running backs in high school and college football history during his days at Johnson County High School (Wrightsville, GA) and the University of Georgia; Robert Hughes, basketball coach at Dunbar High School in Fort Worth, TX; James Hulsman, who retired last year after 33 years as basketball coach at Albuquerque, NM High School; Pat Fragile, veteran baseball, basketball and football official from West Virginia; Del Gab of Dickinson, ND, who has officiated football and basketball for more than 40 years; Susan True, who was a national leader in the growth of several girls sports during her 17 years as assistant director of the NFHS; Dorothy McIntyre, statewide leader in the development of girls sports during her 32 years with the Minnesota State High School League; Marlyn Goldhammer, who retired in 2001 after an outstanding 23-year stint as executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association; Everett Johnson, longtime interscholastic music leader from Iowa and Frank Sferra, veteran speech and debate coach from Colorado.

After 20 years as a sports-only hall of fame, the NFHSA expanded the scope of its Hall of Fame to include individuals in fine arts programs.

McClellan currently ranks seventh among active coaches nationally with 345 career victories. In 35 years as a high school coach in Mississippi and Arkansas, McClellan’s current record stands at 345-66-4.

For the past 31 years, McClellan has guided Barton High School to 318 victories and eight state championships while competing in either Class AA or Class AAA (1978, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1997). The Bears have appeared in the state playoffs in 24 of those 31 years.

After graduating from Delta State University (MS) in 1963, McClellan coached in Mississippi until taking over the program at Barton in 1971. While he has never had anything close to a losing season, his success since 1986 has been amazing. From 1986 to 1990, Barton won 63 consecutive games, which ranks ninth all-time according to the National High School Sports Record Book published by the NFHS.

Since 1986, Barton has won 199 games and lost only 15, which includes seven undefeated seasons. During this time, McClellan’s teams won 111 consecutive regular-season games. All three of McClellan’s sons played for him, including Brad, who was the quarterback for three state championship teams (1986, 1987, 1988), and his daughter, Leann, was a cheerleader and homecoming queen.

In addition to coaching football, McClellan has served as the school’s athletic director and track and field coach. His track teams have won eight district championships and two state championships, and he has been chosen track coach of the year eight times.

Among his football honors, McClellan has been district coach of the year 24 times. He was named high school football coach of the decade for the 1980s by the Arkansas Gazette, and he received a distinguished service award from the NFHS Coaches Association in 1990. He was inducted into the Delta State University Coaches Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

A speaker at football clinics throughout the Southwest for many years, McClellan was president of the Arkansas Coaches Association for one year. Perhaps his most significant honor was when the football field at Barton High School was named “Frank McClellan Field.”
